How To Get Into The Habit Of Walking More

The human body is capable of miles and miles of walking. Yet, in modern society, we spend most of our time sitting down.

That’s not good for our bodies. It leads to a range of health issues.

A daily walk might head off these problems. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

Give up your seat
Most of us sit for our work. We eat sitting down.

And to be honest all we want to do when we come home from work is plop down on the couch for a Netflix marathon until bedtime.

This presents a challenge. But a walking habit is a good one.

Kind of like the habit of brushing our teeth twice a day or taking out the trash on Tuesdays. Once it’s a well-ingrained habit, it won’t be as much of a challenge to make sure we go for a walk each day.

Your path
You can start by finding a walking route you enjoy. Your favorite walk may offer beautiful vistas.

But if it’s a 30-minute drive there and back, you’ll be less likely to do it every single day. Instead, save that particular walk for the weekends.

Then come up with something convenient and pleasant for your everyday walking routine. If you can, find a route in your own neighborhood so you can leave right from your front door.

Taking the same route every day helps form that habit. It’s also encouraging to notice that you can walk the same loop faster or with less effort over time.

You’re steadily getting stronger and fitter.

Incentives
Listening to your favorite music, podcast, or audiobooks is also helpful. It’ll make the time go by faster and give you something else to look forward to.

You can even use your favorite media as a way to bribe yourself to go for your daily walk. Let’s say you have a couple of podcasts you enjoy.

Save them for your walks and only let yourself listen to them while you’re walking. It’s a great incentive to get out there even on days when you’re not feeling it.

Group Walks
Finally, consider walking with other people. Find a walking group in your area, or talk a friend or neighbor into becoming your walking buddy.

Not only is it more fun to walk when you have someone to talk to, it also has some built-in accountability. You won’t want to skip a walking workout when you know that other people are waiting for you to join them.

Give these tips a try. They’ll help you make your daily walk an integral part of your health, your fitness, and your life.

Is Your Money Mindset Setting You Up for Failure?

You feel you can trust your mindset when you begin a new endeavor. But is there a devil in the details?

We’re looking down the road in this GenuLines report on how your money attitude might set you up for a crash.

Is Your Money Mindset Setting You Up for Failure?

dollars for money mindsetYou want to make more money. You see the lavish lifestyles of celebrities and other famous people.

You’d like to have some of that for yourself. But, is your drive for money blinding you to the important things in your life?

It’s often said that if you do something you love, the money will follow. That can happen if you approach whatever you love with passion.

Then again, if making money is your driving force, how will you do that? You’re likely to chase the dollar from one job to the next or from one opportunity to the next.

You’ll get seduced by false offers of riches. Over time, you’ll look back and see how little you accomplished.

You may be successful in the short term. You’ll get that extra dollar from a new job or you’ll squeeze a quick buck from your business.

But, you’ll keep searching for more money.

Experience

It’s possible that if you lack the experience at your new job you won’t be able to handle it. In other words, you didn’t give your previous level enough time to develop a foundation.

You jumped ahead, and now you’re unclear what to do. It’s a concept known as the Peter Principle, named after the person who came up with the idea, Peter Drucker.

Money isn’t as important as a lot of folks believe. For instance, what good is having a high-paying job when you have to work 80-90 hours a week?

What kind of life is that?

Many people who do this, look back at their lives and wonder why they did it. While they may have a lot of money when they get older, they might end up quite unhappy.

Or the workload needed to reach your goal gets you to an early grave. In that case the money they earned is useless.

If you are happy with what you are doing, money becomes a secondary priority. People do need money to live, and you shouldn’t settle for working for less than you’re worth.

Get to the point where you can balance a decent amount of money with doing something that you enjoy. Then expect to live a more satisfying life.

Are You Setting the Right Goals for Yourself?

The New Year is a great time to set new goals. And GenuLines wants you to make sure those new goals are the right goals.

Are You Setting the Right Goals for Yourself?

There is a lot more to goal setting than just picking a goal and moving forward. Yes, this is important.

But it’s also important to make sure that you’re setting the right goals at the right time. These questions will help you head in the right direction:

Are You Setting Specific and Realistic Goals?
It takes a little research to ensure that a goal is realistic. If you’re not sure if something is actually achievable then you haven’t done enough research.

Once you know that the goal is realistic you need to give it a clear description. This will let you work backward to make a schedule of action you’ll need to succeed.

Listing goals

Are Your Goals Multifaceted?
Focusing on only one part of your life is a bad idea. To feel successful people make goals for all areas of their lives.

Say you have a wonderful business and career but your personal life suffers. No matter how successful you are, you won’t feel successful.

Make sure your goals include something from each aspect of your life.

Does Your Scheduling Show Real Need?
For instance, you want to exercise 30 minutes per day. But setting aside only 30 minutes isn’t going to be realistic.

You’ll probably need to set aside an hour. This will cover getting ready as well as cooling down or getting cleaned up to go back to work.

Are You Learning from Failure?
You might feel like giving up when setting goals and schedules. You put your plan into effect but you notice there are things you’ve forgotten to take into account.

Don’t quit. Learn from the failure and change the schedule to be more realistic.

You might find that in practice you have to rewrite all your goals and your schedule. This is natural.

Failure feels like a negative. But the truth is if you don’t fail sometimes you’re not going to learn much and it’s likely your goals are too easy.

Do Your Goals Represent Your Needs and Wants?
A lot of people set goals that represent what someone else wants instead of what they want. This can cause a lot of bad feelings and resentment.

And it can derail the best-laid plans.

As you set your goals for your life, ask yourself if they’re what you want for yourself or what someone else wants for you. Ask yourself if you’re okay with any goal you make being for someone else before you embark on your journey.

Are You Checking in Often to Stay on Track?
To-do lists pale in comparison to a well laid out calendar of tasks and activities that get you from point “A” to point “B”. Make sure that you look at your schedule often.

Make note of when you succeed in sticking to your schedule and when you don’t. Noticing a pattern of activity can help in improving your schedule.

And it can help you stay realistic about whether you’re sticking to the plan.

Do Your Goals Have Positive Focus?
Try writing down a goal and then changing the words to sound more positive to see if it isn’t more motivating. For instance, “losing weight” seems like a good target.

But for some people, it might signify deprivation. Instead, frame the goal as “improving my BMI by 10 points” or “improving my cholesterol by 10 percent.”

Do You Have Too Many Goals Set at One Time?
Just as setting too few goals can be a problem, so can setting too many. Instead, pick one personal goal, and one other type of goal to focus on until you reach them.

Later you can add more as time goes on. You don’t need to do everything today.

Slow and steady wins the race is a good motto to hang on to.

Setting the right goals for yourself takes some thought and consideration. Don’t try to set them all in one day.

It’s better to set some goals in different stages and in different areas of your life. And give a lot of thought to why you’re setting the goals in the first place.

What Does Being Productive Really Mean?

It’s tough being productive during a time of lockdown. And not a good time to think about ways you can kick things into gear.

So GenuLines feels it’s a good time to bring you an overview of how you can make this happen.

(You can listen to this article by clicking here)

What Does Being Productive Really Mean?

productive manIntending to be productive is a worthy pursuit. But over time and with overuse the definition of productive has become a little fuzzy.

Now “Productivity” is a sort of buzzword. It’s used in employee training seminars and self-help techniques.

If you don’t get the true meaning of this word you might waste valuable time that could be better spent.

In a fast-paced driven society we’re expected to produce more in less time. Unfortunately, this can often have the opposite effect.

Here are a few things to consider when looking at how you spend your time,

Busy & Productive Are Not Synonymous
This might be the biggest misconception about what it means to be productive. Staying busy and on the go doesn’t always mean you’re being productive.

Being productive means you are actually getting something done.

It’s easy to jump from one task to another. Could be you shift your focus and attention every five minutes, all in the name of “multi-tasking.”

Now and then ask yourself if you’re actually accomplishing anything. For example, after a five-hour stint on your computer at work, take a look at the end result.

Have you produced something of value that was not there when you first sat down at your desk? Never confuse being busy with being productive.

Progressing Towards Something
This kind of piggybacks off of the previous thought. But this tip deserves its own discussion.

You can get into a kind of “grind” mentality.

You spend hours working at irrelevant things. Again, this may or may not help your productivity.

With anything that you dedicate a lot of your time to, there should be an end goal in mind.

Have a well-understood plan of how you’ll reach it. Productivity involves a linear path from where you are right now to what you want to get done.

If you’re working hard only for the sake of working hard, you run the risk of wasting valuable time and energy. It’s always important to consider your “why” before you commit your valuable time to any task.

Balancing Productivity
Achieving anything worthwhile often involves hard work and focus. But it doesn’t mean neglecting every other area of your life in the process.

For example, you want to transform your body and get in better shape. Will it help if you neglect your closest relationships and other commitments, too?

True productivity includes nurturing every aspect of who you are. Even during the pursuit of something specific.

Sure, there are going to be times when more of your time and energy goes toward one thing in particular. But make sure that not ALL of it is!

As a human being, you are a lot of things at the same time.

5 Simple Ways to Avoid Daily Distractions

No matter how focused you are, some days, it’s hard not to get distracted. And, in a time of societal upheaval, those distractions can get out of hand.

Let GenuLines help you with this list of points to bring back your focus.

5 Simple Ways to Avoid Daily Distractions

Life can sometimes get in the way of meeting your goals, but it doesn’t have to derail you.man endangered by distractions

Here are some expert tips on how to stay on track, no matter what else is happening around you.

1. Get Organized

It’s easier to focus if you’re not distracted by the small, daily tasks. Commit to a nightly practice of preparing for the next day.

Decide what to wear, what to have for lunch and the other necessary things that are part of your routine. Have your gym bag ready and packed so you can just pick it up and go.

It can help to get organized for your week on a Sunday evening. For example, have all your work clothes clean and pressed and ready to wear.

You might even consider a minimalist work wardrobe of similar garments to mix and match. You can also bulk cook and freeze meals so that you don’t even think about dinner during the week.

2. Do the Tough Things First

You can free up a lot of mental energy by putting the difficult tasks and decisions at the top of your to-do list. Do the hardest tasks when your brain is still fresh first thing in the morning.

This way you can get on with your day without a nagging dread at the back of your mind.

3. Keep Your Energy High

It might surprise you to hear that fatigue can be a distraction. If your energy is low, you won’t be performing at your best, so make sure you take regular breaks.

Get out of the office and get some fresh air. Eat your lunch in the park and give your eyes a break from looking at a screen.

Eat lots of fresh foods and stay hydrated by keeping a water pitcher on your desk.

4. Manage Your Priorities

Chances are, many of the requests you get during the day don’t deserve to be your top priority. Instead of responding straight away, decide on how urgent the request is.

Do you really need to answer that email now? Learn to focus on requests and respond as you see fit.

5. Keep Your Eye on the Prize

There are so many distractions in modern life that it can be easy to lose sight of what you want to achieve. Have a visual reminder of what you’re working toward.

This could be a mission statement or a post-it note on your computer. Check-in every day to see how you’re tracking and make sure you keep a line of sight on your big goal.

6 Hacks to Keep Your Motivation Going Strong

Motivation is great- when you have it. But sometimes it slips away like the proverbial thief in the night.

Just ahead you’ll find some GenuLines tips to bring the motivation back where it belongs.

(To listen to the article click HERE)

6 Hacks to Keep Your Motivation Going Strong

robot needing motivationSo you got motivated recently. Maybe you saw an awesome speaker or got a stinging dose of honesty from a friend or family member.

But initial motivation often fades…so here are a few ways to keep it going strong.

1. Remember the pain points
In sales lingo, pain points are problems that come about when the solution offered is not taken. Try to keep in mind all the things that could or will happen if you don’t stay the course.

For example, if you were once motivated to go running three times a week. Think about what will happen if you don’t give your heart the exercise it needs.

2. Don’t play leapfrog
Feelings of motivation can sometimes slip into the category of finding the next high. Don’t bounce from goal to goal.

Instead finish what you start before getting motivated about something else. Let’s say you enjoy language and made a goal for yourself to learn French.

Learn it before you switch to learning German, and then Italian, or whatever else.

3. Know Thyself
When you try to reach goals that other people set for you, your motivation can wane. Take a look at those goals.

Make sure they’re yours…not goals that other people want you to achieve. If they’re not, you may want to set them aside and reassess where you’re going.

4. Visualize
Picturing realizing your goal is a big help in motivating you to succeed. And it has some awesome side effects.

The positive energy you give that imagery will affect you at a subconscious level. The mental affirmation that you can achieve it will do loads for your self confidence.

This will also also help you stay the course.

5. Let go of stuff beyond your control
When it comes to motivation, it can be easy to give up because things don’t’ go according to plan. Learn to let go of things beyond your control. If you don’t they’ll reduce your motivation to succeed.

6. Get organized
If you want to stay motivated, you need to work a little bit to keep the motivation alive. If you don’t it’ll slip under the radar.

Motivation will be just another feeling unless you crystalize it. Put your goals on the calendar and make an action plan.

Powerful Goals Are Yours If They’re S.M.A.R.T.

The lockdown gives you time to make plans and set goals. When it’s over you’ll want to resume your life with a full head of steam.

GenuLines offers a list of steps to make sure your goals are powerful- and genuine!

Powerful Goals Are Yours If They’re S.M.A.R.T.

There are smart goals and then there are S.M.A.R.T. goals. The acronym S.M.A.R.T. can help you set better goals.

The letters stand for Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Reasonable, and Timely. Let.s take a look at each one.

Rubik's Cube toward goals

S

Stands for specific. Be precise.

Use language that spells out what the goal is.

Why you want to reach it. And how you will get there.

Detail is important here. Take the time to do this part right.

M

Stands for measurable. For example, you want to add 100 dollars a week to your income. So you decide to write 5 articles a week for buyers that will pay you for them,

A

“A” can stand for several things, like actionable, assignable, or achievable. Actionable goals give you daily activity to get you closer to them.

Goals should also be achievable or you will only get frustrated. Be accurate about the time it takes to reach a goal, and what actions it takes to get there.

Also, know who will be responsible for doing it.

This can stand for realistic or relevant, and either or both are important and are true. If you want your goal to succeed, it should be something that is realistic or you’ll fail.

It should also be relevant to your life’s vision and match with your values.

T

Various authors refer to the “T” in the S.M.A.R.T. acronym as time-bound, timely or trackable. These are all important parts of the goal creating and setting process.

If you don’t set a time limit and you can’t track what’s happening, your goal will be hard to count as achieved.

There are plenty of words you can use to help you craft your goals. The important thing is that you need to have a process to help you set smart goals.

The ones you know you’ll follow through on and know when you’ve met them.

Can You Learn To Be More Optimistic?

Can You Learn To Be More Optimistic?

Door to optimismWe all know that one person who sees the positive in every situation.  Some of us hate that person.

Some of us love that person.  And some of us ARE that person.

If you’re not that person, you may be wondering if you can actually learn (or teach yourself) to be more optimistic. While some people are inherently positive, others lean toward the negative.

Are we capable of changing from one to the other?
There are many benefits to a positive mindset. Optimists tend to be healthier and they lead lives that are better in most ways.
Changing the Way you Think
It turns out that optimism is more than thinking things will be better and pessimism means they will not. Instead, we use these words to describe the way a person thinks about what causes adversity.

A pessimist tends to think about these things in a way that makes them feel powerless. For example, a pessimist might say their adversity is due to internal forces.

They’ll say it’s all their fault, and there’s no way they can change it.

It’s possible to change the way that you think about things. When adversity makes your first thought a negative one, take a step back.
Re-examine it from a different angle
Let’s say you’re studying for a test and you’re struggling to understand the material. It’s easy to fall into thinking that you’re going to fail.

Rather, think about ways you might better understand the material. Then work on learning and studying what’s needed to help you toward a good grade.

Re-route your pessimism away from making failure inevitable.

Change your thought process and study the material to boost your chances of success. Our attitudes toward things are somewhat inherent.

But it’s possible to change your thinking and be more optimistic in the process.
Don’t rely on clicking off positive quotations to yourself and nothing else.

Do teach yourself to look at every situation from different angles.

Do that and don’t be surprised when your attitude improves, too.

Patience Is A Virture And It Can Be Yours

So patience is a virtue. Well, let’s get a definition of virtue.

Merriam Webster defines patience as “the ability to remain calm and not become annoyed when dealing with problems or with difficult people.” Simple but not always easy!

Patience is a Virtue And It Can Be Yours

Patience is one of those things that can make life go more smoothly. But, a lack of patience can cause serious problems, even health issues.

Some of life’s irritants move us to squeeze a little harder on the hair-trigger of impatience. But we can learn to overcome and enjoy life one day or even one minute at a time,

man needs to patiernce

Circumstances
What triggers your impatience? For some, it’s certain situations or circumstances, such as a job or a family problem.

Others may lose their patience when they’re driving or cooking. Impatience with job or family situation can be especially tough to address – and even harder to fix.

A good start though is to acknowledge it. Then focus on anything that may help relieve tension.

Seek help
Work toward focusing on pleasant things in your life. If a certain task at your job is causing your impatience ask your supervisor or co-worker for help.

They may be able to offer help or suggestions.

Also, they may have a better way of dealing with it or be able to adjust your workload. The problem with many of us is that we don’t want to ask for help.

We want to be able to take on everything even though we aren’t able to do it.
If it’s a family situation the best way to handle it may be to talk about it, which can be difficult.

Again, many tend to shy away or avoid difficult situations.

But, getting it out in the open and talking about it is often the best solution. Seek outside help if a difficult challenge amps up the impatience.

The problem itself may not cause the impatience. But it may trigger something in you that causes you to be impatient.

Focus on other things
Impatience can affect your driving, housework, or other routine tasks. Be ready by conditioning yourself to relax and focus on your breath.

You could try relaxing before you start or listening to music while doing any of these tasks. This is where gratitude comes in.

Be grateful that you can do routine tasks.

Some only imagine cooking or driving but aren’t able to for any number of reasons. Keep this in mind during the tense moments.

It’ll help you to focus on the task at hand, but it may also make you more patient.
