Focus On The Smaller Things to Find True Happiness

Looking for happiness? Sometimes it’s found in the most unusual places. Or, as GenuLines points out today, it can be found in the small things.

Focus On The Smaller Things to Find True Happiness

Happiness is many things to many people. It could be preparing to eat the meal you’ve waited for all day.

smiling faces of happinessOr sitting down on the couch and knowing you’re about to watch the new episode of your favorite TV show. Or getting a backrub from your partner.

These are all examples of what many of us would consider ‘little things. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t be instrumental in helping us to feel happier.

These are ‘creature comforts’ and pleasant asides. But they’re super powerful in raising our mood.

So the question is, how do you get to the point where little things make you happier? And how do you make sure you have a constant supply of such things to make you happy?
Little Things
The first thing to do is to find those little things and to make sure they keep coming. We have things that make us feel great, such as hobbies and activities that we enjoy.

The trick then is to identify how you can enjoy those things on a regular basis.

Next, you need to make plans to enjoy those things. A little ‘pleasure delay’ here can work wonders.

Spend your day at work looking forward to that thing that you want to do in the evening. But don’t indulge.

Instead build up the moment in your mind and look forward to it happening.
Great Things to Do
The problem is that many of us don’t know how to make the very most of our spare time. We spend all day watching TV shows we aren’t interested in.

And we call this our ‘down time’.

In fact though, there are countless great things you can be doing all the time. And the vast majority of them are free.

You could download a free computer game for instance. You could try out a new program or film on Netflix.
Head Outdoors
You could explore a local park. Or read that book you bought ages ago and forgot about.

You could try cooking something weird and ambitious. You could try to plant your own bonsai tree…

There are a million different possibilities.

So spend some time thinking about all the exciting things you could do at home. Make a habit of writing more ideas down as they come to you.

In time you’ll find your life filled with amazing little moments.

Your Stress Doesn’t Have to Own You

What do you do when the constant stress of staying tethered to your house all day feels unbearable? Try some suggestions from this GenuLines list to help you “chunk-down” the job of de-stressing.

Your Stress Doesn’t Have to Own You

calm man resting in chairStress is unavoidable in life, but we don’t have to feel stressed around the clock. We can often prevent stressful incidents and decrease our negative reactions to them.

As a result, many times all we have to do to reduce our stress is to acknowledge that it’s there. Also, there are steps we can take to do an effective job of stress management.

Managing time

Time management skills can allow you more time with your family and friends. Furthermore, they can help with performance and productivity.

This will help reduce stress.

To improve your time management:

· Save time by focusing and concentrating, delegating, and scheduling time for yourself.

· Keep a record of how you spend your time, including work, family, and leisure time.

· Prioritize your time by rating tasks by importance and urgency. Re-direct your time to activities that are important and meaningful to you.

· Manage your commitments by not over- or under committing. Don’t commit to what isn’t important to you.

· Deal with procrastination by using a day planner. Break large projects into smaller ones.

And set short-term deadlines.

· Examine your beliefs to reduce conflict between what you believe and what your life is like.

Build healthy stress coping strategies
It’s important that you identify your coping strategies. One way to do this is by recording stressful events, your reaction, and how you cope in a journal.

With this information, you can turn unhealthy coping strategies into healthy ones. Those that help you focus on the positive and what you can change or control in your life.

Lifestyle

Some behaviors and lifestyle choices affect your stress level. These may not be direct causes of stress.

But they can interfere with the ways your body seeks relief from stress. Try to:

· Balance personal, work, and family needs and obligations.

· Have a sense of purpose in life.

· Make sure you get enough sleep since your body recovers from the stresses of the day while you are sleeping.

· Eat a balanced diet for a nutritional defense against stress.

· Get moderate exercise throughout the week.

· Limit your consumption of alcohol.

· Don’t smoke.

Social support
Social support is a major factor in how we experience stress. This is the positive support you get from family, friends, and the community.

It affirms to you that you’re cared for, loved, esteemed, and valued. And research shows social support can support better mental and physical health.

Ways of thinking
When something triggers negative thoughts, you may experience a range of problems. These include fear, insecurity, anxiety, depression, rage, and guilt.

Add to those a sense of worthlessness or powerlessness.

Emotions like these trigger the body’s stress, much like an actual threat does. Dealing with your negative thoughts and how you see things can help reduce stress.

· Thought-stopping helps you stop a negative thought to help do away with stress.

· Disproving irrational thoughts is good practice. You’ll avoid exaggerating the negative thought and anticipating the worst. And you won’t give it an incorrect interpretation.

· Problem solving helps you identify all aspects of a stressful event and find ways to deal with it.

· Maybe it’s time to change your communication style. You want to make sure others won’t feel put down, hostile, or intimidated.

This reduces the stress that comes from poor communication. Use the assertiveness ladder to improve your communication style.

And Finally…

Anybody can get stressed. You don’t have to have a high powered job or any job at all.

Let’s face it unemployment is stressful in itself.

Whether you’re a mail carrier, the CEO, or a parent, stress is going to affect you from time to time.

Above all, how you deal with it is what counts.

Appreciate The Small Things and Find Contentment

Appreciate the small stuff and you’ll be happy. You hear it enough.

But what is happiness anyway?

Today GenuLines looks at appreciation and its “kissin’ cousin”, contentment.

Appreciate The Small Things and Find Contentment

smile to appreciateMost emotions are transitional, meaning you’re never in one state for long periods. People who are considered upbeat will have moments of sadness or depression.

Even depressed people aren’t depressed all the time. They have moments of happiness, too.

Think about a major event such as a war. When two countries are fighting, both sides lose lives.

It’s bloody, and it can last for years. But, when the war is over, the countries are euphoric.

There will be no more bloodshed because of the war, and people can return to their homes. But, nothing that has changed in the world except that the war has ended.

In other words, the sun still sets each day. People still have to manage their lives.

The euphoria from the war ending doesn’t last long. Months later, the war is still over, but the euphoria has died down.

Same goes for sickness

The same is true in a smaller way when you have a bad sickness. For instance, suppose you have a stomach bug that leaves you uncomfortable and in pain.

When the bug passes you feel fine. But you don’t feel any better than you did when you weren’t experiencing the bug.

It’s relative to the bad feelings. That’s how emotional states work.

They go from one to the other on a constant basis.

Appreciating the small things in life may lead to happiness. But, it’s likely you’re content more than you are happy.

Contentment can almost be thought of as a neutral state, leaning toward the happy side. There’s nothing wrong when you’re content.

But, there also isn’t anything that is making you overly happy.

Striving for happiness can be stressful. You might want to shoot for contentment instead.

Contentment is likely to find you when you appreciate small aspects of your life.

And it comes without the hassle of working hard toward happiness.

If you spend most of your life being content you’re doing something right. Think about all the people you love and what you have, such as your health and a good job, etc.

If you try to imagine life without them, you will truly appreciate your contentment. That thought may even make you happy for a short period.

Chi For Yourself brings you lots of information on meditation. Here’s a rather long article on how meditation can help brain health.

If you want to read it in its entirety you can click on the link and be taken to the Chi For Yourself “Meditation” page

ARTICLE:

Can Meditation Help Keep Your Brain Young?

As we age, our brains lose weight and volume. These changes may start to occur as early as our mid to late 20’s.

Research has shown people who meditate lose less brain mass over time than those who do not. One finding was especially interesting.

People who meditated showed less of a decrease in their white brain matter.

White brain matter acts as a connector and insulator for gray brain matter. It carries nerve impulses between the functional parts of the brain. Continue reading the article
