Are You Committed to Excellence?

You’ve no doubt heard of the phrase ‘committed to excellence.’ Now, do you understand what it means?

The following quote is from Aristotle:

“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”

Immediately you can see that excellence is a habit, and you can create most any habit. The best way to create a new habit is by setting new goals and creating a plan of attack.

Let’s see how you can do this.

The Why

First you want to define your reasons, or why, for wanting to commit to excellence. Does this pertain to your business, your family life or for some other reason?

If it helps write down your reasons and your why for wanting to achieve this.

If your business is your target there are some simple actionable steps that you can put into place. As for your clients, get into the habit of demanding more from yourself than they do of you.

You can please your clients by doing any of the following:

Giving more value

Over delivering

Finishing the work ahead of schedule

Adding a bonus

Be A Pro

Another way to improve is with a professional image. Is your website, logo, and brochure information looking good?

Are your business cards and other materials all up to date and modern looking? If not this is one simple area to improve upon.

Customer service is another area to examine. Make sure you have a great customer service center, whether online or offline.

Always respond to tickets in a timely fashion. And never get angry at the customer, regardless of the situation.

If you want to excel in life then start by putting forth the best effort you can. If you do this on a consistent basis you’ll have that air of excellence surrounding you.

This will rub off on other people and they’ll begin to view you in a different light.

Why Routine Is Good for You

You hear people refer to routine as being dull or boring. It implies that life is the same from one day to the next.

But, routines are a great way to get your work done. They’re also a great means for teams to work together toward a common goal.

When everyone has an idea of what needs to get done, projects tend to run smoother. Each member knows what they need to do.

We also have routines in our society. In some ways, laws are  routines.

You know that you aren’t supposed to run a red light and that can be thought of as a routine. When you come to a red light, you stop as best as you can.

There may be instances when you unsuccessfully try to beat one here or there. But, most people will stop for red lights.

To no one’s surprise this helps to reduce accidents.

It Starts at Home
You set up routines for your kids in the form of chores. You know that certain tasks need to get done each week.

Many parents tie kids’ allowances to these chores. When the kids finish their chores, they receive their allowances.

It teaches the kids a work ethic. They need to perform tasks, and when they complete those tasks, they receive money for them.

When you pay bills, you tend to have a routine for this. Some people like to get everything sorted on one day and pay all the bills on that day.

Others will pay them whenever they receive them. Others, still, will set up automatic payments through their bank or brokerage.

There isn’t a right answer for how to do this. Whatever works for you is the right answer.

But, the method you choose will be routine.

When There Is No Routine
Contrast this with people who don’t have routines to manage their lives. They tend to handle tasks when the mood strikes them.

These people are usually late with their bills and have messy environments. Some of these people will say that this way of life works for them.

Others call it chaos. It’s something you can easily avoid setting up routines for the tasks you need to complete.

Of course, people are not robots. They do break up their routines on occasion.

You may use weekends to do activities that you don’t get to do during the work week. Also, many families use vacations to help break up their routines.

3 Steps to Creating New Habits

Let’s talk about forming new habits. There are times in our lives when we want to create new and better habits for ourselves.

This could include getting into the habit of eating healthier. It might be drinking more water. Or it could be moving more and taking the dog for a daily walk. Or it could be work-related, or spiritual, or…

There are so many areas in our lives we can improve and make easier if we create new habits.

Getting into the habit of doing something is often easier said than done. We seem to form bad habits without any effort, but getting into a “good” habit can be a little more challenging.

We’ll break it down into a three-step process. This will make it easy to follow until you’ve internalized the new behavior and made it a true habit. You’ll do it without having to think about it. Like brushing your teeth.

Decide What You Want To Do

The first step is to decide what the new habit is. Be as specific as possible. Be bold. Don’t tell yourself you want to exercise more. Say something like “I will go for a 30-minute walk every single day.” Deciding what your new habit will be and committing to when and how you’re going to do it, is half the battle.

Remind Yourself To Get It Done

The next few days should be smooth sailing. You’re motivated and excited to get this done. Sticking to your new habit isn’t an issue. But a few days in you’ll notice that it’s easy to slip back into old habits.

Say it’s raining and you’re not feeling like going out and walking. Or the hours in your day seem to be getting away from you. This is when it’s important to have a daily reminder. Set an alert on your phone or add the new habit to your daily to-do list for a while.

Make It Part Of Your Routine Until It Becomes A Habit

It takes some time before a new behavior becomes a true habit. Until then, a routine will work to your best advantage.

A routine will help you solidify the habit. This way you won’t have to spend a lot of willpower or rely on daily reminders.

Make that daily walk part of your after-dinner routine. Or switch from grabbing a snack at the vending machine at work at 10:00 in the morning to packing a healthy snack.

You can do this! Decide to create the new habit. Practice the routine until it’s second nature and you’ll be well on your way to forming a new good habit.
