We couldn’t let Valentine’s Day slip by without a look at relationships from our “Conscious Talk” point of view. So…..a couple of love offerings to honor the day!

In Love Cycles, veteran couples therapist Linda Carroll presents a groundbreaking model of the five natural stages of romantic relationships — the Merge, Doubt and Denial, Disillusionment, Decision, and Wholehearted Love — and a guide for navigating through them toward lasting love. Love Cycles helps readers understand where they are in the cycle of their relationship and provides a clear strategy for how to stay happy and committed, even in difficult times.

Long-term happiness in love depends on a couple’s ability to repair the inevitable rifts and differences, large and small, that occur in any relationship. Neuroscience suggests that relationship upsets are best mended quickly, or they accumulate in long-term memory, increase reactive communication, and become harder to repair successfully. And good repair takes five minutes or less! The book Five Minute Relationship Repair from Dr. Susan Campbell and Dr. John Grey offers practical tools and suggested scripts for resolving problems and having your needs met.

Next CHI FOR YOURSELF: Secular Meditation- Intentionally Nonreligious

picture of john kobikYou deserve to experience meditation’s rewarding effects on the body and the mind, even if you’re not interested in religion! Some in our CHI FOR YOURSELF community have said they question meditation because of its religious trappings. But our scheduled guest on the next edition of CHI FOR YOURSELF says meditation actually is an age-old secular practice with lots of scientifically verified physical and psychological benefits. Rick Heller is an author, meditation teacher and co-founder of the Humanist Mindfulness Group at the Harvard Humanist Community. He emphasizes the importance of meditation with a practical, evidence-based perspective.

When Good Prayers Go Bad

On the heels of the US visit by Pope Francis Chi For Yourself  looks into the power of prayer. When she talked to us in 2012  August Gold reminded  us that since the beginning of time men and women everywhere have prayed — millions of prayers daily and yet only a handful of those prayers are answered. August suggests that prayer is something that everyone wants to do but a lot of people have confusion or concern about because they think they don’t know how or that they’re praying incorrectly. August Gold is the co-author (with Joel Fotinos) of The Prayer Chest.
