Time Management: Key to a Better Life

Time can be a merciless tyrant when you let it get the upper hand. But things go much better when you’re the one in charge

Here are some ideas from GenuLines on how to become master your time.

Time Management: Key to a Better Life

Time management is pretty much about focus. The Pareto Principle is also known as the ’80:20 Rule.’

It tells us that 80% of efforts that are not time managed or focused generate only 20% of the desired output. But 80% of the desired output can result from only 20% of a well time- managed effort.

(The ratio ’80:20′ is only arbitrary. It’s used to put emphasis on time management’s effect on gains or losses.)

Some look at time management as a list of rules. They can involve scheduling of appointments, goal settings, and thorough planning. It can also include creating to-do lists and prioritizing.

But There’s More

There are more skills involved in time management than the core basics. You also need to see the big picture.

Your efforts are meaningless if you have the wrong goals. Other personal growth must-haves are decision making, clear vision, and critical thinking.

Personal time management involves everything you do. No matter how big and no matter how small, everything counts.

Take into consideration what you learn, advice you consider, and skills you develop. And make life-style balance the desired result in your personal time management.

This is a part of personal time management that many of us overlook.

Stress?

For some people, time management seems stressful. They think it means that they must not ‘waste time’ by doing anything they don’t enjoy.

But that’s not it at all. In fact, it can be closer to the opposite.

Time management is making time for the things that matter to you, not about being busy.

There are six areas of life that personal time management can improve. These are- physical, intellectual, social, career, emotional and spiritual.

The physical aspect involves having a healthy body, less stress, and fatigue.

The intellectual aspect involves learning and other mental growth activities.

The social aspect involves developing personal or intimate relations. Add to that being an active contributor to society.

Time Management and Choices

The career aspect involves school and work. The emotional aspect involves recognizing appropriate feelings and desires and manifesting them.

The spiritual aspect involves a personal quest for meaning.

Some of these areas lend themselves well to basic time management skills like to-do lists. But determining which area isn’t getting enough attention is important too.

Each one creates the whole you.

For Your Consideration
One permanent improvement step to consider is reviewing your goals. This is the case whether it be immediate or long-term goals.

A way to do this is to keep a list that is always accessible to you. This is not a to-do list but a list of your goals.

You can add to it as you like. Remember, you have goals in all aspects of your life.

In fact, everything you do moves you toward one of those goals. Even if it is a goal you did not know that you had.

Get Physical

Another aspect of time management is recognizing your physical abilities and needs. For example, everybody has peak times of day when their concentration is at its best.

For most people, this is around the middle of the morning. Use that period to work toward one of your goals that calls for concentration and sustained effort.

It would be wasting that peak time if you spent it sitting and watching TV. Yet sitting and watching TV for an hour in the evening may not be a waste of time at all.

It can be a good way to wind down for a restful night’s sleep. You can include most every kind of activity that you enjoy in your day.

But make sure it keeps its proper place.

Get To It

It’s important not to procrastinate, or put off the things that need doing right now. If something is your top priority for the day, then get started on it right away.

If you start doing other things first it will become harder and harder to tackle the main task. You’ll end up without much achieved.

So the night before, decide what will be your top priority for the following day. Then tackle it as soon as you can when the day comes.

Be In The “No”

Learning to say “No” to some people or activities is important if you’re going to make the most of your time. It could mean telling your boss that you’re not the best person to do a certain task.

Or that if you do this, you won’t be able to do that more important thing that he also wants from you.

It could mean telling your kids that you can only play with them at certain times. It could mean turning down an invitation.

Or rescheduling a meeting to make way for something more important.

Remember Your Priorities

None of this will be a problem as long as you make it clear to other people that they’re important to you too. When it’s time for work, you don’t play with the kids.

And when it’s time to play with the kids, you give that your full attention.

You don’t act in a way that makes them think that you would prefer to be working. Remember, time management does not mean prioritizing your work above all else.

It means making room in your life for everything that is important to you.

Lesson Learned On A School Bus

Often the most important lessons you learn are outside of the classroom?  And they can double as stories you tell again and again throughout your life.

Today via GenuLines I share one of those with you.

Lesson Learned On A School Bus

It was sort of a side hustle. A job that would back up another job that would fund my college tuition.

lesson on chalkboard

I was a 22 year old school bus driver.

Most of my driving consisted of extra curricular activities and outings. One of those involved a field trip for kids from an inner city school in Pittsburgh.

Off we go

This group was like most. Talking, laughing, happy for a break from their stuffy classrooms.

We headed for the park and its wide open spaces. As I wheeled toward the entrance there was an anticipation that was palpable.

Everyone piled out of the vehicle full of happy expectation- with one exception.

The boy
He stayed in his seat, saying nothing and sort of staring into space. I wondered why he wanted to stay inside and miss a chance to enjoy the day with his friends.

I made an attempt to open him up a bit. It didn’t do much good.

He mumbled his responses and I couldn’t make them out. I did convince him to get up and go outside and I was sure he was going to run to catch up with the group.

But he didn’t.

He stood there in the same quiet state that kept him entranced during the ride. I thought the best thing for me to do was go back inside the bus and leave him to his thoughts.

But after a minute or so I heard, and felt, a loud bang on the side of the bus. Then there was another.

Ready, aim..
Outside the bus I saw this boy picking up chunks of dried mud from the parking lot. He was breaking off pieces and throwing them at the bus.

And I mean throwing them with a gusto a major league baseball scout would have admired.

This time I thought it best to get him back to his seat and away from any people who might be in the area. And now I questioned him in a more persistent way.

But his answers didn’t shed any light on why he would target a 72 passenger bus for a shelling. I did manage to keep him engaged in conversation.

And then the talk switched to movies.

Scene and heard
He volunteered that he had recently seen the movie Jaws. As he took me through the scenes of the movie he became more upbeat and animated.

I hadn’t yet seen the movie. But I didn’t mind hearing about the final scene without a spoiler alert.

The rest of the kids came back from their visit and we headed back to the school. I felt glad that I could diffuse the situation.

But I started to wonder what kind of a life this boy might be going back to.

Is he ignored in a dysfunctional house? Do his needs go unmet?

Is he a victim of violence?

Learning curve
Would this experience change the boy’s life? Probably not.

But it taught the driver the importance of listening and caring. And that lesson would never show up on a college syllabus.

Signs Your Current Routine Needs an Update

Your daily routine can be so hum-drum that you don’t even notice. This can leave you feeling that you’re sort of stuck in “neutral.”

Get your life back in high gear with this GenuLines look at how you can get back up to speed,

Signs Your Current Routine Needs an Update

Daily routines can be invaluable for improving our lives. But they aren’t all equal.

When you’re creating your first routine, there are several things you may miss out on or get wrong. At first, it may have worked for you.

But now you’ve stopped seeing the progress you wanted.

As humans, we change and evolve over time. Where you are now and how you feel willDull routine look completely different from how it did a year ago.

This means, what works for us, in the beginning, may not work for us further down the line.

Not sure whether your routine is working for you? Examine the issues, situations, and signs below.

They can help you decide if you need to hit the “refresh” button.

You find the routine is difficult to stick to
The right routine will become easy to follow over time. But, all routines need effort in the beginning.

When you’re making changes, the mind needs time to adjust. It has to re-learn different patterns of behavior.

It’s often said that it takes around 21 days to build up consistent habits. If you’re still struggling after 21 days, it could be a sign you need to change it.

You don’t see the value in it anymore
When you first start following a routine, it adds a lot of value to your life. It can boost energy levels, reduce stress, and make you feel happier.

You’ll have few problems identifying the value in the things you’re doing.

If you’re struggling to see the value in your routine, changing it up can help. Over time, you change and the things that once helped you are no longer relevant.

This means it’s important to make changes as you and your circumstances change.

There is no room for spontaneity
Daily routines create structure. Yet you want to leave some room for flexibility.

Life is unpredictable and it needs factoring into your routine. If you make it too strict, you’ll find it’s much harder to follow.

Stick to including the most important tasks in your routine. These include habits to improve your mornings.

Don’t aim to create a strict timeline of how your day should go.

You find change more difficult now
One of the great things about a daily routine is that it gives you structure. And it should leave room for change, too.

If you use your daily routine to avoid change, it’s time to stop.

Many people find that change is a lot tougher if they’ve been following a strict routine. Such as adjusting to a rigid new schedule.

Any change can leave you feeling stressed out and overwhelmed. But it’s important to be open to change so re-doing your routine may be necessary.

These are some of the top signs you may need to update your current routine. Remember, over time you may need to alter your routines.

You’ll be making room for any lifestyle and personal changes.

Tips to Develop Your Money and Your Life

Money is at the center of so many of our problems. Too many to mention here.

What’s worthy of mention is ways to deal with this, and GenuLines is right on the money with help for you.

Tips to Develop Your Money And Your Life

One of the biggest pressure points for families is that of financial stress. When yourmoney at man's feet financial house is in order the other parts of your life seem to falls into place.

For most of us financial planning was not a part of high school or college curriculum. No lessons on checkbooks or 401k’s or emergency expenditures.

Without balancing your life’s money issues it’s tough to have balance in other areas. Unfortunately, money controls much of our thought patterns, time, and worries.

Figure Out Your Spending Habits
Learn your financial patterns. Then have a sit-down money talk with your partner.

Do this whether you’re a spendthrift or a frugal financier.

The Spendthrift
If you have no interest in where money comes from or how to manage it, you’ll find that money will manage you. Spending more than you earn is never a good practice.

Sit down with your finances.

Figure out what’s coming in. What’s going out.

And keep the difference for yourself as spendable income.

It is that simple. Living above your means is something that you dont want to do, ever.

Living above your means is never a win/win situation.

The Frugal Financier
If you won’t part with a penny, much less a dime, you’ll have a hard time relating to anyone about money. There’s got to be some wiggle room for playing hard much the same as working hard.

No one admires someone who won’t part with one red cent, even for fun.

Get Together with Your Financial Partner
You and your financial partner can put your differences to work in your favor. Come up with ways to meet somewhere in the middle.

Compromise is key in a relationship.

And what better way to incorporate that tool than to use it in your financial life.

6 Hacks to Keep Your Motivation Going Strong

Motivation is great- when you have it. But sometimes it slips away like the proverbial thief in the night.

Just ahead you’ll find some GenuLines tips to bring the motivation back where it belongs.

(To listen to the article click HERE)

6 Hacks to Keep Your Motivation Going Strong

robot needing motivationSo you got motivated recently. Maybe you saw an awesome speaker or got a stinging dose of honesty from a friend or family member.

But initial motivation often fades…so here are a few ways to keep it going strong.

1. Remember the pain points
In sales lingo, pain points are problems that come about when the solution offered is not taken. Try to keep in mind all the things that could or will happen if you don’t stay the course.

For example, if you were once motivated to go running three times a week. Think about what will happen if you don’t give your heart the exercise it needs.

2. Don’t play leapfrog
Feelings of motivation can sometimes slip into the category of finding the next high. Don’t bounce from goal to goal.

Instead finish what you start before getting motivated about something else. Let’s say you enjoy language and made a goal for yourself to learn French.

Learn it before you switch to learning German, and then Italian, or whatever else.

3. Know Thyself
When you try to reach goals that other people set for you, your motivation can wane. Take a look at those goals.

Make sure they’re yours…not goals that other people want you to achieve. If they’re not, you may want to set them aside and reassess where you’re going.

4. Visualize
Picturing realizing your goal is a big help in motivating you to succeed. And it has some awesome side effects.

The positive energy you give that imagery will affect you at a subconscious level. The mental affirmation that you can achieve it will do loads for your self confidence.

This will also also help you stay the course.

5. Let go of stuff beyond your control
When it comes to motivation, it can be easy to give up because things don’t’ go according to plan. Learn to let go of things beyond your control. If you don’t they’ll reduce your motivation to succeed.

6. Get organized
If you want to stay motivated, you need to work a little bit to keep the motivation alive. If you don’t it’ll slip under the radar.

Motivation will be just another feeling unless you crystalize it. Put your goals on the calendar and make an action plan.

Choose Your Reaction to What Life Sends Your Way

Life has a way of knocking you to your knees. And tough times just seem to keep the bad stuff coming.

But GenuLines wants you to remember that a thought-out response can protect you from action you’ll regret.

Choose Your Reaction to What Life Sends Your Way

Whether life slams you or only throws you a curve you might tend to react without thinking. But making rational thought your first reaction puts you in control.

life ringKnee-jerk reactions rarely work to your advantage.

Here’s an example. A customer says your product is horrible and wants a refund.

You’re on the defensive but your calm response takes away the person’s power.

Now your life isn’t dictated by things happening around you. You control your emotions.

Taking the “reins” in this way keeps your emotions under control. And making this a habit can contribute to a happier and more satisfying life.

Reactions that aren’t thought out tend to be irrational. And this can get you into a lot of trouble.

Highway tailgaters might seem like your enemy. You get upset and you try to get away from them.

Or, you try to get back at them.

This can cause a crash or an altercation Think about simple solutions to solving the problem at hand.

There are times when an immediate reaction is appropriate, such as the loss of someone close to you. You’re not going to make a situation like that positive.

For the emotions that follow, such as grief, choose how you’ll handle having these feelings.

Talk things out with a grief counselor. Don’t put it on the back burner.

It’s important to recognize situations in which instant reactions are acceptable. Don’t confuse them with situations that call for well thought out, controlled responses.

Are You Making Your Life Hard?

When life is hard we tend to look outside ourselves for reasons. We don’t want to think the cause is a lot closer to home.

As always, GenuLines helps re-direct you back to your “self” as a start toward getting your bearings.

Are You Making Your Life Hard?

life training pictureEvery day brings us a million things to take care of and it’s easy to fall behind. But sometimes life is hard because we’re making it that way.

One reason we make it harder is that we want to feel like we have some control. Let’s look at some ways you might be getting in your own way.

You Assume Malicious Intent

Most of the time people don’t mean to inconvenience you or make your life harder. Could be the person who cut you off in traffic was in a hurry.

Your significant other was quiet this morning. It may have been due to fatigue rather than anything you did.

If we decide the world is out to get us, we make life harder than it has to be. Be very slow to assume malicious intent.

It usually leaves you angry and unpleasant. The truth behind someone’s intentions is usually far from malicious.

And often not personal at all.

You Maintain Unreasonable Expectations

One thing we can control about life is our expectations. That doesn’t mean that we should go through life expecting and getting nothing.

Instead don’t expect the glass to be half full, half empty, or even a little full. Be grateful that it contains any wine at all!

You’re Afraid of Risks

Avoiding risk is part of human nature. We don’t want to run into danger unless we know we can get out of it.

But our bubble of comfort can often become a prison. Risking social rejection, loss of money, and loss of time is a trade-off for making our lives better.

When we spend most of our time avoiding risks, we make life harder.

Make sure you take smart risks! Think of an area in your life you’d like to expand upon and set some short terms goals.

Once you’ve challenged yourself and become comfortable again, set some higher goals!

You Compare Yourself to Others

One negative feature about social media is that it enables us to compare ourselves to others. Even worse, we compare ourselves to others in only their best moments.

Your friends may not have it as good as they’d like you to think. There will always be someone with more money, more friends, or whatever else than you.

The only person you should compare yourself to is the version of you from the past.

In short, we need to worry less about others, less about risks, and maintain our expectations. Don’t spend your life trying to be other people.

Or thinking the world is out to get you. Or afraid to take a chance.

Don’t expect things to get better without changing your actions. That sets you up for failure.

Stop making life harder!

5 Steps to Find Your Passion

Your passion in life seems so elusive. Yet, the ancients told us you carry it with you at all times.

5 Steps to Find Your Passion

If you want to live your best life, then you need to find your passion and follow it. Sounds easy, no?

Actually, it isn’t that hard, so it’s surprising that more of us don’t do it. Rather, we seem to choose existing over living a life of happiness and success.

To make a positive change in your life consider the following five steps.

Step 1: Dream Big

Everyone has big dreams. What have you done with yours?

dog dreams of his passionDo you think about them, act on them or hide them away?

Help yourself find your passion and purpose, by dreaming big. List those big dreams you’ve had from childhood to today.

No matter how wild or funny, write them all down. Which of those dreams resonates most with you?

Which makes your heart sing and inspires you the most?

Now, if you’ve set your sights on being the first full-time resident of Mars, then double-check your list.

You may be coming from your ego rather than your Self.

Don’t expect your dream to be outrageous or huge. But expect that it will push you out of your comfort zone.

Be ready for the changes in your life that will help you achieve it. You’ve got to want it.

It needs to spark your inner passion and desire.

Step 2: Set Mile Markers (Goals)

I’ve always preferred the words “mile markers” to goals since goal has the sound of being finished.

Once you’ve fleshed out your ideal or dream you need to set your mile markers. They’ll lead you to your dream.

There will be other, smaller goals, that you will need to achieve along the way. You want to jot these down, too.

Step 3: Plan Your Way

Now that you know what you want and need to achieve, it’s time to plan what you need to do to get there. Think about several things.

The action you need to take. The resources you’ll need.

And anything or anyone that can provide help and support.

Step 4: Take Action

You know what you want, how you can achieve it and the steps to take. It’s time for action.

Remember you’re looking for a passionate life. One that fills you with excitement, joy, and success.
Step 5: Live Your Best Life
Once you’re taking action and seeing your direction you’ll find that your life starts to improve. Instead of dreading each day you’ll look forward to it with excitement and anticipation.

Your best life is the one that gives you achievement AND fulfillment. It’s the result of living your passion and your purpose.

You can get your desired result on your own. Or you can get the help of a coach or mentor.

Either way, your passion is waiting for you.

A Good Morning Routine Can Change Your Life

How would it feel to start your day motivated and organized? It would be great, wouldn’t it?

You’d know what you were doing, and that everything was sorted out. You’d feel brilliant.

two people's morning routineIt wouldn’t take much to get a great start to your day every day. The key is to create a morning routine that motivates and organizes you for success; every day.

One of the secrets of success for the very successful is a morning routine. It doesn’t need to be complex nor does it have to be time-consuming to create or follow.

First, you’ll need to commit to planning it. Then practice it daily until it becomes a habit.

Now let’s look at the morning routine of motivated and organized people:

Early Start

Forget about long lie-ins and putting the alarm on snooze every 5 minutes. Set your alarm for an hour (or even two) earlier than normal and see your productivity soar.

The early start may be tough at first. But if you go to bed earlier and get enough sleep you’ll soon notice a positive difference.

Positive Visualization and Affirmations

Set the tone of your day with a positive charge. Visualize your success from the get-go.

Use positive affirmations. To boost their efficacy display those affirmations where you can see them often.

Do this step within the first 20 minutes of waking. The affirmations will reach your subconscious before your conscious mind takes over.

Exercise
Do some form of exercise. It will get your blood flowing, send oxygen through your body, and generally wake up your entire system.

You don’t need to go for a 5-mile run every day. Your regimen could consist of morning stretching, yoga or Tai Chi.

These will help calm and ground you as well as provide time for inner contemplation.
Hydration
Make sure you keep your body hydrated. Many people start their day with a glass of water and lemon.

Herbal tea or green juice are also good choices for an early morning drink to get your day started the right way.

Planning
When you know what needs to be done you increase your chances of having a successful day. Have a to-do list ready and identify the order of priority.

Make sure the list isn’t too long, 10 items or fewer is an ideal length.

Nutrition
A healthy breakfast fuels your body for the day ahead. You’ll feel more alert.

And you’ll be better able to concentrate on what needs to get done.

Reading
Take some time to read. A few minutes of inspiring material will help you be positive and motivated.

Even 10 minutes can be enough to get your mind working and your motivation kick-started.

The list of possible reading material is endless. From biographies to self-help the writers can inspire you and even act as role models.

Money Tasks
Somewhere during your day, you want to do something that will either make you money or keep you from spending it. Pay your bills so that you don’t get overdue notices and charges.

Kitchen Patrol
Prep the day’s meals so that you don’t feel tempted to get take out when you’re feeling tired at the end of the day. Load the dishwasher.

Clear (and clean) the kitchen counters.

If you want to have a successful day, start it in a positive way. Having a morning routine will ensure that you’re organized for success.

And you’ll feel motivated from the start.

How to Set Powerful Goals You Can Achieve (pt 2)

Your goals are important to you. That’s why GenuLines used two days to cover the topic.

Today we offer some takeaway thoughts toward reaching your goals and building your genuine life!

banner to help you set goals

How to Set Powerful Goals You Can Achieve (pt 2)

Be Measurable
At which point have you achieved the goal? If you can’t come up with a number or something that’s measurable, then you won’t have a real goal.

Let’s say you want your business to earn x number of dollars each week by a certain date. You would work out the how and why you’re going to do it.

Computers show goals

Be Actionable
To achieve any goal there have to be steps you can take to get there. It’s like using a map to reach a vacation destination.

You need to draw a map to your vision of success with the steps and paths you’ll take along the way. Put not only what but when, and how you’ll reach your endpoint.
Be Realistic
You don’t want to work toward a goal that’s too hard to achieve or worse, impossible. Make sure to do thorough research and be realistic about your expectations.

For example, you’re not likely going to start a business today and earn six figures by tomorrow. Or even your first year in business.

Look at the research and determine what is doable and how you’ll do it.
Be Timely
Every goal has to have a time limit otherwise you may never achieve it. Start at the end and work your way back to today.

Create a list of things to do each day to finally reach the end result. But, do set a time limit. You can adjust as you get into the project if it works to be more realistic.

But resist the urge to change the time because you’re not sticking to your task lists.
Now Create!
Keep these points in mind to create powerful goals that you can achieve.

You’ll reduce your failure chances because:

  • you can always adjust your timeline and your goals
  • you’ll learn as you move along in the process

The important thing is to give each goal a lot of thought, consideration, and study before setting it.
